Halton CAS Statement: September 15, 2025

Statement by Michelle McGaw, Executive Director, Halton Children’s Aid Society

The Halton Children’s Aid Society (Halton CAS) offer our sincerest condolences to the family and the Indigenous community upon the tragic loss of an Indigenous child on December 21, 2022, who was on an adoption probation placement that Halton CAS was supervising.

Immediately following this tragedy, we conducted a number of reviews to examine child safety and adherence to standards. We remain committed to learning everything we can about what happened in this case and to implementing any further changes that advance the safety and well-being of the children, youth and families who we support.

We have and will continue to cooperate fully with the Halton Regional Police and the Office of the Chief Coroner. Given this matter is before the courts and is subject to a court-ordered publication ban, as well as to the provisions of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act, we cannot comment further.

Our profound thoughts and condolences continue to be with the family and the Indigenous community. We want to reiterate that the safety and well-being of the children, youth and families who we support is at the core of the mission for our Board of Directors, leadership and staff of the Halton CAS. We will continue to do everything in our power to ensure that children, youth and families are protected and supported.
