Halton CAS Celebrates Foster Caregivers During Foster Family Appreciation Week: October 19-23, 2026

During Foster Family Appreciation Week, Halton Children's Aid Society (Halton CAS) honours the vital role foster caregivers play in the lives of children and youth. Foster caregivers provide safe, nurturing and affirming care while helping children and youth maintain important connections to family, kin, community, culture and identity.

Foster caregivers support children and youth in many important ways, including:

  • Providing safe, nurturing and affirming care: Creating environments where children and youth feel respected, supported, accepted and able to be themselves.
  • Supporting healthy development: Responding to each child or youth’s unique developmental, emotional and behavioural needs while providing stability and encouragement.
  • Maintaining important relationships: Supporting meaningful connections with family, kin and community, and, wherever possible, working alongside families toward successful reunification.
  • Strengthening community connections: Helping children and youth remain connected to school, activities, relationships and other supports that contribute to their wellbeing now and into the future.
  • Supporting identity and belonging: Creating space for children and youth to maintain, strengthen, explore and express the identities and connections that are important to them, including culture, gender and spirituality.

Halton’s foster caregivers step forward when children and youth need them most. They offer much more than a place to stay. They provide care, stability, encouragement and connection during what can be incredibly difficult periods in a young person’s life. Their commitment to children, youth, and families deserves our recognition and heartfelt thanks.

“Our foster caregivers open their homes and their hearts to children and youth at times when care, stability and connection matter enormously. We are deeply grateful for the compassion they show, the relationships they help sustain and the important role they play alongside families, kin and our community.”
– Michelle McGaw, Executive Director, Halton Children’s Aid Society

Recognizing Our Foster Caregivers

In honour of Foster Family Appreciation Week, Halton CAS hosted a recognition event for foster families and volunteers on Friday, October 16, 2026. The day offered an opportunity to connect, participate in wellness activities and spend time together.

While the activities were enjoyed by all, one of the most meaningful parts of the day was simply the opportunity for foster caregivers and volunteers to connect with one another, strengthen relationships and celebrate their shared commitment to children, youth and families.

Support Your Community as a Foster Caregiver
